There's no denying that 2020 was a challenging year but despite this the Young Accelerators team delivered a range of STEM activities and is ramping up for an exciting 2021.
Despite COVID-19 we still engaged with a significant number of students and teachers in 2020. Across the year we saw 8338 students and teachers from 213 schools. This compares with 10,000 in 2019. Just over 2600 students attended our curriculum-mapped workshops.
94% of teachers reported their students benefitted from our workshops.
Other major achievements in 2020 included:
- Re-branding from 'STEM for Schools' to 'Young Accelerators'
- Launching our STEM Learning Hub and Careers in STEM pages with a range of resources and links for students and teachers
- Developing new workshops and online content which incorporate creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship through STEM
- Running COVID-safe High School Research Internship and STEM Camp programs.
- Providing 11 STEM Scholarships to commencing students totalling $33k
It was also a great honour to win the STEM Education Partnership Award through the Queensland Government's 2020 Peter Doherty STEM Awards for Excellence in STEM Education.
Implementing COVID-safe arrangements we have an exciting range of activities in 2021 including our signature events - High School Research Internships (applications open 8 February 2021) and STEM Camp.
From the 2020 STEM Camp cohort 96% are considering studying at QUT and 95% would recommend the Camp to their Year 10 peers
